interactive media seminars and conferences
convergence
convergence is a UEL seminar series which has been running for a number of years and which is dedicated to exploring interactive media practices, run in conjunction with our MA Interactive Media Practice. The continued and rapid development of digital media technologies directly affects our engagement with media and the practicalities and aesthetics of production. Aimed at exploring new media practices from the practitioner's perspective, the seminar series explores genres such as net.art and software art, cyber-activism, open source movements, generative media production, peer-to-peer technologies, database aesthetics, immersive environments, intelligent media and other web, CD, DVD and digital media installation practices. All of these practices are located in the context of debates about the culture and politics of new media.
Past speakers at convergence include:
- David Cotterrell (University of Hertfordshire)
- Geoff Cox (i-DAT, University of Plymouth)
- Lisa Haskel (Media Arts Project)
- Tim Jordan (Open University)
- Matt Locke (BBC Creative Archive)
- Celia Lury (Goldsmiths College)
- Simon Pike (Broadsnout)
- Nina Pope (Somewhere)
- Derek Richards (Hyperjam)
- Tiziana Terranova (University of Essex)
- Nina Wakeford (University of Surrey).
convergence is organised in by Roshini Kempadoo and Helen Kennedy.
There are also a number shows and screenings of student work throughout the year. Undergraduate students’ media production work is brought together in an end-of-year show which usually takes place in June, whilst the work of MA students is usually shown around November.
